Looking for an E-Reader? Know What to Look for!

Posted on 11 February 2011

E-Book readers have become one of the most popular accessories among consumers nowadays, and we’re no longer limited to a few brands and models to pick from, we now have dozens of models on the market and the choice can be quite a difficult one. If you want to get yourself a good e-book reader, there are some things you should keep in mind in order to make the best choice.

Format compatibility is easily the biggest issue with this type of hardware – the dust hasn’t settled down yet since the devices grew so popular, and standards haven’t been developed to a large extent yet – which means there are going to be quite a few discrepancies between the different brands, including what you can read on their devices and what you can share between different devices. There have been some attempts to circumvent this lately, for example by introducing systems where you can read books for other devices on your own, but these aren’t completely reliable – so as a good rule of thumb, examine the libraries of the devices you’re interested in, so that you know what you’re headed for.

Accessibility is something else that’s of great importance – some of the models nowadays offer very poor capabilities in terms of managing your book collection. If you want to make sure you’ll be able to get the ones you’re after, go for the popular brands like Amazon’s Kindle or the B&N reader – the thing is, these people know how to make an interface appropriate for accessing books.
